I count at least 4 forms of reversible male birth control under development and in trials. Some have proven safe and now they need to prove they are effective.
If just one is effective then look out; that’s a social tsunami heading our way.
It’s difficult for anyone born after The Pill to imagine what social life was like before The Pill. Our characterization of the past is caricatured due to the difference that having sex without fear of pregnancy from before The Pill is so radically different from our own.
We don’t get dating morals of the past.
And we are about to get a whole new tsunami if any one of the proposed male birth control solutions work.
Unplanned pregnancies went up after The Pill was introduced due to women loosening the restraints of sex with various men who they were not married. The Pill also had lots of “oops” moments where the woman forgot to take her pill.
The prevalence of non-daily birth control has lowed these “oops” babies and abortion eliminated many more of these pregnancies. It would take an alternate history writer to imagine how our world would look different if The Pill and other forms of birth control never worked.
Total Fertility Rate has been dropping like a rock since The Pill took effect and now we are at a point where the civilized world is dying. The world TFR is 2.24 and all of the G7 plus China are well below replacement levels.
This is before Male birth control comes online.
Men basically don’t want kids in countries where men are expected to provide for, raise, and invest in children.
Men do want lots of sex and they don’t want to wrap it or snip it.
They will take birth control in masses.
Think about the couples you know who had one or two kids in their 30’s. Upper middle class, perhaps. They have a dog and then the wife decides she needs to have a baby or two and the man goes along reluctantly because he wants sex.
This is how the upper class reproduces. That and having an “oops” while the wife is breast feeding the first child and can’t take hormonal birth control is where these nice new suburbs come from.
I hope you people with large mortgages on houses in the suburbs are saving money because there is going to be a much smaller generation of “nice families” having one or two babies in 5—10 years from now and your home will not be as valuable.
Because those babies aren’t going to be born and those new young families will be so rare that they won’t be able to keep home prices up.
The world’s population is going to nosedive How do men in Africa or the Middle-East like the idea of having sex without kids being born? Maybe they don’t care as much as people in the West or East Asia where birth rates are low but who knows? The last places on earth with TRF’s above 2.1 may drop to South Korean levels of fertility.
I see the Amercan TFR dropping to South Korean levels within a few years of MBC being on the market personally.
UN population projections will need to be dramatically altered downwards for this new development.
What will a “men’s rights” movement look like with The Pill - Male Edition? Will men demand “my body my choice” and tell the wife too bad but it’s just the dog baby?
I think the future is bleak for humanity in this scenario.
We have been told by economists that falling population is bad for the economy. I don’t fully understand all the implications but I know without people there will not be enough people to service growing debt or pay for age based social services.
Maybe the robots will save us and it will be really cool.
Just think of our Amish/Evangelical/Mormon world full of robots.
You’re teaching your kids robotics right? No? You’re teaching them farming then, right?
In this near future world, marriage becomes a sham other than for religious people. A higher percentage of women will be prostitutes than ever before as sex has no relation to mating and men will refuse to get married.
Men without children will take over the world more fully than ever and they will not give a damn about the future or about women. The future will be a generation or two of a MGTOW fantasy and then religious people, hopefully with robots.
You can forget Mars. Forget Utopian cites in the sky. It’s not going to happen. No one is going to manufacturer the babies either because no one wants them; there’s no money in making something no one wants.
People want the perfect baby now because other people have babies. When other people stop having babies they won’t want them anymore. Designer babies will go out of fashion.
What does this future look like in 200 years? Techno-pastoralism where every family gets a city block.
It could be very cool indeed.
